You can’t predict the future. If you could, you would be too busy counting the millions you just won in the lottery to be reading this now. But, since you can’t see the future (and, most likely, don’t have millions in spare cash lying around), you face an important decision on whether or not your air conditioning system needs to be replaced.
When your air conditioner breaks down, a repair job is cheaper in the short run than replacing the system. However, if your air conditioning system is actually on its last legs, there will soon be other parts breaking down as well. Though there is no way to know for certain whether your existing A/C will last for many more years, or only a few weeks or months, there are some ways to make an educated guess.
Based on our experience, here are some indicators that your A/C should probably be replaced:
- Your A/C has been repaired multiple times or has recently been found to have multiple parts in need of repair.
- Your A/C is at least 10 years old. This means it is getting close to its expected life span, and any repairs are more likely to be a short-term fix.
- Your air conditioner is excessively loud, or your home has excessive dust or humidity problems. Besides the annoyance factor, these can be signs that your air conditioning system has problems.
- Your home uses more electricity in the summer than it has in previous years. If an older air conditioner is not functioning well, it will often become less efficient, requiring more electricity to do its job. Since new air conditioning units are generally more efficient than older models anyway, the electrical savings can go a long way towards paying for the cost of a replacement.
