Insulation helps keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer by providing thermal resistance in areas where heat is likely to escape or (in the summer) enter your home. There are many different forms of insulation available today. These are all quick guidelines to the types of insulation that are available to homeowners.
Batts and Rolls – These are made from plastic fibers, fiberglass, natural fibers or mineral wool. It is good for floors, ceilings and foundation walls.
Rigid Foam Board – These are made from polyurethane, polystyrene or polyisocyanurate. It’s good for unvented low-slope roofs, foundation walls, ceilings and floors. This provides a thinner insulation for a higher insulating value.
Sprayed Foam – This is made from polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, phenolic or cementitious. It is good for wall cavities and attic floors.
Concrete Block Insulation – This is made from vermiculite or perlite pellets or with foam beads. It’s good for foundation walls and needs masonry skill knowledge to work with.
Loose-fill – This is made from mineral wool, fiberglass or cellulose. It is good for attic floors, wall cavities and places that are hard to reach.
ICF – This is insulating concrete form insulation made with foam boards. It is good for foundation walls and is built into the home’s walls.
Reflective System – This type of insulation is plastic film, cardboard, polyethylene bubbles or foil-faced kraft paper. It is good for walls, floors and ceilings.
SIP – This is structural insulated panels made from foam board or straw core. It is good for walls, ceilings, floors and new construction roofs.
