The winter months are approaching, and as well as your air conditioner served you this summer, its a good idea to put it out of commission until you need it again.
You want your cooling system to be in the best shape possible when you bring it back out next summer, and to ensure this, here are a few easy precautions you can take:
- Clean your air conditioning unit, and do it safely. Some people recommend using a water hose to clean your cooling appliance, but this can cause wires to short out, and that can be dangerous. Instead, use a cloth or the bristled brush part of a vacuum cleaner to gently wipe the unit clean of debris.
- Don’t leave your air conditioner exposed to the elements. Since you know we’ll get lots of rain and snow this winter, take some precautionary measures in protecting your cooling system. A lot of people will tell you to completely cover the appliance, but that can smother it, and trap unwanted moisture inside. Instead, set up a small canopy over the air conditioner. That way, it will protect the appliance from the weather, but no moisture will be trapped within.
- Get that tuneup out of the way now. Regular maintenance and tuneups are imperative for keeping an air conditioning unit in good shape, and if you haven’t been staying on top of this routine, now is the perfect time to get it done. If you make the move to have a professional look at your air conditioner now, it will go a long way towards ensuring that it’s in good shape next summer, when you need it the most.
Some of these precautions may seem like a lot of work, but you certainly won’t regret putting in the effort when your air conditioner comes out of its layover in great working shape. For any professional HVAC needs in the Metro-East area, contact us at Ernst Heating & Cooling.
