Chances are, your home has a variety areas where energy is being lost or wasted, making your utility bills unnecessarily high. A professional energy audit can help you learn how and where you can save on energy use and expenditures in your southwest Illinois home.
A home energy audit is an assessment of your home’s energy usage and efficiency, and will identify any problems you may have and how to correct them. Again, the goal is to save you money and make your home a more sustainable living space.
Before the audit, make a list of problems that you’re aware of. Â Do you have any drafty areas or rooms? Can you see condensation in any spots? Gather copies of every month’s energy bills for the last year (your utility company can provide that information if needed). Here are some questions your auditor may ask:
- Who is home during the day, Monday-Friday?
- How many people live in your home?
- Do you use every room?
- What’s your thermostat setting when you are home, summer/winter?
A blower door test will help determine your home’s airtightness. A powerful fan is mounted into the frame of an exterior door and pulls air out of the house. With the inside of the home depressurized, outside air rushes into openings that are not properly sealed. Then, a pressure gauge and an airflow measurement manometer measure how quickly, and where, this happens.
In addition, a thermographic scanning (infrared) device will detect thermal defects or air leakages in your home’s exterior and possibly interior framework. The scan can identify areas of your home that are lacking in insulation.
